What is a Psychometric Test?
Psychometric tests explore the depths of a candidate’s mind by evaluating their personality, aptitude and behaviour. A recent survey carried out by the Society for Human Resource Management estimates 18% of companies use psychometrics in the hiring process.
What is a Psychometric Test?
Psychometric tests are the scientific devices used to measure a person’s mental capability and behavioural capacity. They assess both strengths and weaknesses of that individual and within organisations the primary purpose being to gauge suitability and performance within a particular role.
Psychometrics provide valuable insight into a person’s mind, painting a picture of their personality and ability, things that cannot be accurately evaluated during face to face interview.
The History of Psychometrics
The idea of psychometric assessment began in the early 20th century when Alfred Binet devised a method that helped determine which students did not learn effectively from regular classroom instruction. After much time and research came the birth of the first intelligence test known as the Simon-Binet IQ test.
Since then these tests have become regularly used during the recruitment process within many organisations, using these tests to evaluate the candidate’s personality, behaviour’s and aptitude to better understand that person.
Why Use Psychometric Tests?
The traditional methods of recruiting through the use of both CV’s and interviews is becoming vastly outdated, with organisations being challenged on their diversity and the need to address the uneven representation among their workforce the need for psychometrics has never been greater. Psychometrics offer data driven insight allowing for a more objective view of each candidate removing unconscious bias and reducing the risk of discrimination when making recruitment decisions.
Schmidt and Hunter found that General Mental Ability was the single best predictor of job performance and when combined with other selection tools such as personality tests and structured interviews the predictability only increased. Therefore, with the combination of psychometrics and structured interviews offering the highest validity in predicting job performance they increase the success of your hiring decisions.
