Mental Health Awareness Week
May 18th – 20th sees the return of Mental Health Awareness Week in the UK. 2019 was a triumphant year for The Mental Health Foundation, (hosts of the Mental Health Awareness Week), as the theme ‘Body Image’ received huge media plaudits.
A little bit of history…
The Mental Health Foundation has been running the awareness event since 2001 with the ambition of starting a more open dialogue around mental health. Their campaigns reach millions of people every year and with the world in a unusual place, it could be more crucial than ever to discuss our mental health.
The theme…
The theme for Mental Health Awareness Week this year is ‘Kindness’, a simple word but with incredibly powerful effects.
The Chief Executive of the Mental Health Foundation, Mark Rowand stated “We have chosen kindness because of its singular ability to unlock our shared humanity. Kindness strengthens relationships, develops community, and deepens solidarity. It is a cornerstone of our individual and collective mental health”. It is very interesting that Mark Rowland has stated kindness as a key contributor to the development of community and relationships, two big contributors to a healthy mind but currently disrupted due to COVID-19 lockdown restrictions.
There are many types of kindness and while we might all claim to covet more of it in our lives, it can often be an undervalued commodity in business and worse – even be perceived as weakness.
