The Need for Psychometrics in Organisations

The Need for Psychometrics in Organisations

Psychometric tests are used across a huge variety of organisations to aid identification of an existing or prospective employees’ personality, behaviour, and competency to do a specific job role.

But Why is The Need For Psychometrics in Organisations Ever Growing?

A study conducted by The London School of Economics discovered that around 70% of companies use psychometric testing. A figure that has been rising for quite some time. With that being said, why are organisations adopting psychometrics?

Recruitment/Talent Acquisition

It is often a gruelling task to pick between candidates. Candidates may have a similar educational background, similar employment history and similar skill set. In this scenario, it can be difficult to know who the best fit for the company without psychometric tests. The key difference is if the person is good for the role as well as a good fit for the company or the team they will be working within.

The team an employee will be joining is a key component to the success of the candidate, but this is often overlooked. It is important that a candidate will have complimentary characteristics to the team that they are joining, or at the very least, characteristics that can co-exist without clashing.

Many companies want to promote a certain culture and atmosphere in their workspace, and it can be important to recruit candidates who have complimentary traits to that culture. Hiring somebody who does not fit that culture and mindset could also cause difficulties in their tenure.

Team Development

Psychometric testing is also commonly used for team development.

Through issuing a psychometric test to existing personnel within the organisation, management will be able to see how to get the best out of their staff by analysing which attributes they possess, and which roles/tasks match those attributes the best.

On speaking about the need for psychometrics in organisations, Managing Director of Inpsyght Consultancy, Thorbjorn Bengtson stated the following:

“The need for psychometrics in organisations is paramount. Many make the mistake of believing that psychometrics are only deployed during the recruitment process, and whilst this is very effective, it is certainly not the way to make the most of them.

Psychometric testing should be deployed across an organisation to know the traits of staff and monitor their growth. Of course, in order to monitor growth, psychometric testing should be deployed regularly as a blanket test across all staff”.

Next week we will continuing the discussion around how organisations can benefit from using psychometric testing. On Tuesday we will be discussing the ability to develop your current team. Whereas, on Thursday we will talk about the benefits psychometric testing can have throughout the recruitment period.
